The first macro lens in the Art series: Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art

Reading Time: 6 minutes - September 30, 2020

Sigma presents a newly developed 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art for Sony E-Mount and L-Mount full-frame. Find out what we can expect from the first macro lens in the Art series in this article.

Exclusively developed for full format: at the highest level!

The new macro lens is the first in Sigma's Art series. It is characterized above all by the optical performance and AF performance in the sense of the SIGMA Art product line and the excellent processing quality! The innovative optical design of the 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art ensures excellent sharpness and fine reproduction at all shooting distances, from the macro range to the infinity setting. Clear images without color fringing are also achieved. This is achieved, among other things, by paying particular attention to the correction of longitudinal color aberrations. This is because longitudinal color errors cannot be corrected by the camera's internal aberration correction. The background and the bokeh are particularly important in macro photography. Here, too, Sigma has placed great emphasis: the high yield of ambient light creates beautiful out-of-focus circles, while the natural bokeh in the foreground and background gives the photographic forms of expression incredible flexibility.
When the lens is used together with the TC-1411 (1.4x) or TC-2011 (2.0x), the two new teleconverters from SIGMA developed exclusively for use with L-mount lenses, photographers can achieve macro shots with an even larger image scale at the same shooting distance. The 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art offers everything required for a medium telephoto macro lens - at the highest level.

An Art series lens: performance and AF power

Optical performance has top priority in the design of the lenses in the SIGMA Art product line. This naturally also applies to the 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art and it therefore delivers outstanding imaging performance from the center to the edge of the image. Rigorous testing in the development phases of the lens minimizes ghosting and reflections to a high degree and the tests ensure that the optical performance is outstanding even in backlit conditions. The latest functions have also been optimized, such as face and eye detection AF, and the lens is equipped with a powerful Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), which ensures highly precise and quiet AF operation.

Functions and build quality

The 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art has a focusing range limiter, which is extremely practical for macro shots, as you can preselect or limit the working range of the AF. The lens also has an AFL button* to which the photographer can assign certain functions.
The manual aperture ring on the lens can be used optionally, is intuitive to operate and also very functional. Using the aperture ring click switch, the aperture ring can be clicked at each aperture stop or not, for example if this is not desired for the background noise when taking macro shots of insects. There is also an aperture ring lock switch. Thanks to all these advanced functions, photographers can optimally adapt their working method to their shooting style and the situation.
The lens is also dust and splash-proof, so that it can be used without any problems in harsher shooting conditions. All rings and switches, in turn, are characterized by a particularly durable construction, excellent operability and a comfortable grip.
User-friendliness, adaptability to the environment and smooth operation have been designed for professional use. The 105mm F2.8 DG DN MACRO | Art pushes the boundaries for photographers and offers them a wide range of creative possibilities.
