Panasonic Lumix S5 full-frame all-rounder - camera novelty with L-mount

Reading Time: 5 minutes - 02.09.2020

Following the release of the L-mount alliance at the last Photokina, Panasonic Lumix has only presented extremely high-priced mirrorless full-frame cameras in the last two years. With the new Lumix S5 presented on September 2, Panasonic is opening up a new field and introducing an all-round camera in a lower price segment. The new Lumix S5 is intended to appeal to every hybrid photographer and be the perfect combination of photo and video. In this article, we explain which functions the new S5 has and how the new mirrorless camera compares to the popular Sony Alpha 7 III !

Size and handling of the Lumix S5

First things first: Yes, the S5 is smaller than the well-known S1 series. And significantly so! The Lumix S5 is roughly the same size as the EOS R and Nikon Z6. With a weight of 712 grams (including battery & memory card), the S5 is slightly heavier than the competition. The slightly larger body has the advantage that the S5 can be held securely in the hand thanks to the pronounced hand grip. The operating concept of the Lumix S5 is very similar to that of the S1 , with a joystick and an individually assignable selection dial on the back. The body of the S5 is made of magnesium and is also protected against dust and splash water.

Image quality of the Panasonic Lumix S5

The Lumix S5 has a 24.2 megapixel sensor without a low-pass filter. The image signal is processed by a Venus Engine processor. A function that we already know from the Panasonic S series is the Dual Native Iso. The dual basic sensitivity enables the S5 to achieve extremely low noise values, even at high ISO values. The basic sensitivity is determined automatically. The ISO sensitivity of the S5 ranges from 100 to 204,800. The 5-axis image stabilizer built into the body stabilizes up to 5 f-stops, with a stabilized lens up to 6.5 f-stops. Definitely decent for the price range. The IBIS also makes another function possible: the High Resolution function! This turns 24 megapixels into 96 megapixels in RAW / JPG on a tripod.
