4DFOCUS: continuous tracking
Continuous AF and an optimized AF algorithm significantly improve AF accuracy and tracking. Even when the shutter release button is pressed, the permanently activated AF tracks random subject movements seamlessly.

What is 4D FOCUS?
Ordinary autofocus (AF) only captures space. 4D FOCUS goes one step further: an innovative image sensor captures both time and space, enabling exceptionally clear images of moving objects. The result is razor-sharp images like you've never seen before. Forget plain old autofocus - the future of photography is in motion.

WIDE - Area (2D)
Capture subjects in a wide area, even outside the center of the frame.

FAST - Depth (3D)
Focus quickly, whether your subject is moving towards or away from you.

CONTINUOUS - Time (4D)
The fourth dimension of 4D FOCUS is time - this enables precise prediction and continuous tracking of your subject's next movement.

Wide AF area
Capture subjects across the entire frame. 4D FOCUS activates points over a large area, allowing the camera to detect objects not only in the center of the image, but spread across the entire image.

Ultra-fast focusing
4D FOCUS instantly determines the distance to your subject and focuses quickly and precisely thanks to the innovative autofocus algorithm. So you can capture every moment.

Continuous tracking
Never lose sight of your subject. Sony's AF algorithm continuously focuses on your subject and even anticipates the next movement of your subject without being distracted by distracting elements in the frame.

Speed meets artificial intelligence
With real-time tracking and real-time eye-detection AF, you can track your subjects quickly, accurately and intelligently. It uses artificial intelligence-based algorithms and processes large amounts of data in real time.

AI-basedreal-time tracking10
After selecting the subject, the focus is precisely maintained with the shutter button pressed halfway. Position changes are accurately tracked, giving you the flexibility to frame the image in search of the best shot.

Underlying technology
The AI detection algorithm efficiently processes color, pattern, distance, face and eye data from the image sensor for maximum accuracy.

Instant eye focus
Real-time AF with eye detection maintains focus on the subject's eyes when the shutter button is pressed halfway or the AF-ON or custom button is pressed, even if another object passes in front of the subject.

Prioritize the right/left eye as required
You can now even set an eye of your choice to track before or during shooting using a custom button. This allows you to better focus on composition, light and other details.

AF with eye detection for animals
Fast and accurate automatic detection and tracking of human and animal eyes11 greatly improves your success rate when shooting animals in nature or at home.12

More AF functions for reliable shots
Reliable even in low light conditions
State-of-the-art AF algorithms enable high AF precision in difficult lighting conditions up to EV-3. The "Focus priority" option under aperture control is used for more precise focusing in low light13 or smaller aperture values.

User-friendly focus frame
The focus area can now be moved to any position using the multi-selection function, even when the shutter release button is pressed halfway. Depending on the subject, you can set a red or white focus frame.

Outstanding image quality
State-of-the-art multi-layer CMOS sensor
With around 24.2 effective megapixels, high sensitivity, back-illuminated construction, seamless lens-on-chip design and other Sony innovations, you can take impressive pictures in a wide range of shooting situations.

State-of-the-art image processor
The latest BIONZ X image processor uses front-end LSI to enhance high-resolution sensor performance.

Brilliant image quality
High sensitivity up to ISO 51,20014 and optimized algorithms ensure a harmonious expression with natural skin tones and seamless gradations of, for example, the sky. 14-bit RAW output is also available.

Quad VGA OLED Tru-Finder, 3.68 million pixels15
The electronic viewfinder with 3.68 million pixels15 displays images in detail. The refresh rate of 120 fps16 ensures a smooth viewfinder image. The fluorine layer on the outside of the Lens repels dirt and is easy to clean.

5-axis image stabilization integrated in the Body
Integrated optical 5-axis image stabilization
The integrated optical 5-axis image stabilization offers a shutter speed advantage of 5.5 steps17. Live View image stabilization makes it easier to frame moving images.
(1) Yaw (2) Pitch (3) Rotate

Blur reduction
Sony has redesigned the shutter assembly with damped screws that absorb shutter movement. An optimized image stabilization algorithm reduces camera shake. In addition, the shutter is now quieter.

Aesthetic 4K videos
With full pixel readout without pixel binning, 2.4 times more data can be processed than required for 4K (equivalent to the amount of data for 6K) to achieve a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and thus aesthetic 4K videos - in addition to the versatile use with fast hybrid autofocus, AF with eye detection, touch tracking, etc.

Wide range of video functions
AF with eye detection in real time for videos
The AF with eye detection in real time now also recognizes the subject's eyes when shooting video. Since the α9 II keeps the eye precisely in focus and tracks it continuously, there is more time for framing18.

Touch tracking for constant focusing
For videos with the α9 II, tap your subject on the LCD screen to automatically focus and track it via touch tracking. If a human eye is detected, AF with eye detection is also activated in real time.
