With the visionary Leica SL system in 2015, Leica Camera laid the foundation on which the SL2, a new icon of the historic brand, is being presented today: the next evolutionary step in the construction of a perfect universal camera. Taking into account feedback from SL photographers, the company has pushed the boundaries of technological innovation and performance with the Leica SL2, while maintaining its high design standards. The Leica SL2 stands for pure performance and unsurpassed build quality. It features improved ergonomics and a more comfortable grip combined with the proven, simplified three-button operating concept that further unifies the Leica design language across multiple product lines. State-of-the-art new features such as image stabilization in the camera body unlock the potential of the legendary Leica M lenses and underline the performance of the growing selection of SL lenses, which are among the best Lens Leica has ever produced. The Leica SL2 is the logical further development of the innovative Leica SL and offers a groundbreaking future perspective for digital photography and videography - without denying its origins and history.
Sustainably produced
The SL2 is the only mirrorless camera that is developed and manufactured in Germany. With an unparalleled solid metal construction and elegant leather finish, it is a camera that defies adverse conditions, offers years of shooting pleasure and the future-proofing that consistent firmware updates ensure.
Optimized design with new status menus
The Leica SL2 offers an innovative user interface with an efficient design that allows photographers to devote their full attention to the creative process. The design adaptation to the M and Q systems makes handling even easier for experienced Leica photographers.
The display on the back shows the most important shooting parameters, where they can be set quickly and easily with a simple tap of the finger. A click wheel, a joystick and three cleverly placed, individually configurable buttons also contribute to simple operation. Thanks to two special status menus for photography and video, the parameters for both shooting modes can be set completely independently of each other.
Improved ergonomics for carefree photography in any situation
Despite significant technical improvements such as image stabilization in the body, the Leica SL2 is no larger than its predecessor, but feels particularly compact to handle. This is due to the completely redesigned camera body, whose grip and edges have been subtly refined for easier handling. Optimized body design paired with increased durability make the Leica SL2 the perfect companion for any kind of shooting. The SL2's IP54 certification ensures increased protection against moisture and dust, while a new option to switch off noise reduction enables better long exposures. Thanks to carefree handling of weather and environmental situations, photographers can concentrate fully on the shot.
Overall, the design of the SL2 is more reminiscent of the iconic Leica identity and the traditional elements of the design DNA for which the brand is known and appreciated.
47 megapixel CMOS sensor for superior image quality
The unprecedented resolution of the SL2's CMOS image sensor in 35mm full-frame format results in detail reproduction and image quality that is second to none. An enormous dynamic range, a color depth of 14 bits per RGB channel and a sensitivity of up to ISO 50,000 enable outstanding image quality in all lighting conditions. Even in combination with Leica TL lenses, which are designed for the smaller sensor format of the Leica TL2 and CL, the SL2's sensor delivers an outstanding image resolution of over 20 megapixels.
New Leica Object Detection Autofocus
The new Leica Object Detection AF ensures fast and reliable AF operation. In addition to a range of modes and functions, including face detection, the SL2's powerful AF system also automatically detects whether an object is moving or stationary and switches between motion and focus priority accordingly.
Optical image stabilization through sensor shift technology
One of the most important developments of the Leica SL2 is the movably suspended sensor, which adjusts its position to compensate for camera shake quickly and efficiently. This in-camera method even enables image stabilization for Lens that are not equipped with it.
In addition, the Leica SL2 can take up to eight consecutive images on the tripod in Multishot mode, moving the sensor in half-pixel increments between each shot. This important feature quadruples the resolution to around 187 megapixels, resulting in an extreme increase in detail resolution.
Leica EyeRes viewfinder with even higher resolution
The camera's electronic viewfinder now has a resolution of 5.76 megapixels, enabling a large, completely natural-looking viewfinder image. At the same time, the experience of using the touchscreen is further improved, as it has been enlarged to a diagonal of 3.2 inches and now offers a significantly higher resolution of 2.1 megapixels.
The ultra-fast Maestro III processor
The new Maestro III processor gives the Leica SL2 a superior operating speed, which is reflected in many aspects of the camera's performance. The autofocus is significantly faster and enables almost instantaneous triggering in every shooting situation - complemented by the new Smart AF mode, which switches autonomously between focus and shutter priority. Full-resolution image series are possible at ten frames per second with the focal plane shutter and 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter. Thanks to two UHS-II-compatible SD card slots, raw files can be stored simultaneously in DNG and JPEG format on separate cards.
Perfect tool for filmmakers
In addition to its performance portfolio for photo shoots, the Leica SL2 also speaks the language of filmmakers, as the camera can shoot up to 60 frames per second in Cine 4K mode and up to 180 frames per second in Full HD mode. Activating Cine mode transforms the SL2 into a manually controlled film camera: ISO becomes ASA, the exposure time is given in degrees of orbital aperture and the f-stops, which indicate the aperture ratio, are replaced by T-stops, which indicate the actual amount of light falling through the Lens onto the sensor. Connecting audio devices to the Leica SL2 no longer requires adapters, as the camera now has built-in headphone and microphone jacks, complemented by a full HDMI port for external monitors.
Limitless connections
Thanks to the L bayonet, the Leica SL2 is not only compatible with the ever-growing portfolio of SL lenses, but also with the lenses of the TL system and, via adapters, with the legendary lenses of the Leica M, S and R systems. This results in over 170 lens options, so that the optimum solution can be found for every photographic scenario. The L-mount alliance further expands these possibilities by giving SL2 photographers access to L-mount compatible lenses from Panasonic and Sigma.
Leica FOTOS App
The Leica SL2 is also supported by Leica FOTOS, the versatile app available for Android and iOS smartphones. Leica FOTOS connects directly to the camera via Wi-Fi (Bluetooth® is also supported by corresponding cameras) and saves the login data so that the connection is as convenient and smooth as possible when the camera is used again later. Leica FOTOS can be used to remotely control the camera's Live View function, allowing settings relevant to shooting, such as aperture, ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation, to be made directly on the smartphone. Of course, the camera can also be triggered wirelessly, which opens up completely new creative possibilities for image composition.
Thanks to the high-resolution displays of modern smartphones, the sharpness of the images taken can be checked directly afterwards in a 100 percent preview - the exposure data is also displayed, which is extremely helpful for follow-up shots.
Once you have made your own selection, the selected images can either be shared via social networks or post-processed on the move. Leica FOTOS can also be used in conjunction with many popular image editing apps. For full potential, the images can also be forwarded to the respective post-production app as DNG raw data. If the finished images are saved on the smartphone after processing, this can be done in a separate Leica album if desired - snapshots are thus kept separate from elaborately composed and post-processed images in the Leica FOTOS app. Many new features and a completely new mobile workflow on the iPad await users of the FOTOS app from November 21 - when version 2.0 of Leica FOTOS will be released.
