Gray filters or neutral density filters (ND) are used when too much light restricts creative possibilities. They reduce the light according to their density. This enables longer shutter speeds or wider apertures. The applications are varied and sometimes experimental. For very bright subjects in the snow or on the beach, the aperture would have to be closed despite the fastest shutter speed. This would mean losing the option of a narrow depth of field, for example for portraits. Gray filters help to create wiping effects with movement if the exposure time can be extended at the desired aperture. For example, a waterfall no longer appears "frozen", but as a flowing movement. Gray filters achieve sophisticated effects in architectural or urban photography. With long exposure times of several seconds, people walking through the picture are blurred or no longer reproduced at all. For physical reasons, very dense filters produce a warm tone, which can be compensated for in image processing.

Note: In order to avoid vignetting, this filter has a superstructure of the front lens, i.e. the diameter of the front lens is larger than that of the rear lens.
