The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV - for all those who strive for the perfect shot
Hobby and professional photographers alike have been eagerly awaiting the continuation of the EOS 5D series. Now the time has come - the new top-of-the-range model, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, is here. Like its predecessor, the EOS 5D Mark III, the new model is one of the most versatile DSLR models to date. Among other things, feedback from the photography community was evaluated and implemented during the development of the camera.
Innovative Dual Pixel Raw format
The 30.4-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor impresses with its wide dynamic range and the option of fast continuous shooting at up to seven frames per second (7 fps). With internal 4K video recording as well as integrated WLAN and GPS, the EOS 5D Mark IV represents a successful combination of speed, high resolution, excellent low-light properties and modern video functions. The EOS 5D Mark IV is the first EOS that can record in Dual Pixel RAW format. This file format enables the correction or shifting of the focus point, a horizontal shift of the bokeh and the reduction of lens reflections during post-processing.
The devil is in the detail
At the heart of the EOS 5D Mark IV is the brand new full-frame CMOS sensor with 30.4 megapixels. It offers enormous detail even in the brightest highlights and deepest shadows. The ISO range of 100 to 32,000 can be extended to ISO 50 to 102,400 and enables outstanding shots in practically all lighting conditions. An optimized noise reduction algorithm leads to even better low-light results, which is ideal for photojournalists, for example, who have to work with the given lighting conditions on location and from the situation.
The AF system of the EOS 5D Mark IV consists of 61 AF fields that cover a wide image area in a grid pattern.
This simplifies focus tracking on fast-moving faces or changing colors. The 61 AF points - including 41 cross-type sensors - not only cover a large area of the sensor. They enable autofocus to be used with the optical viewfinder even at -3 EV (which roughly corresponds to moonlight) - even down to -4 EV when the camera is in Live View mode. When using extenders on all telephoto lenses, the EOS 5D Mark IV focuses very precisely up to f/8 with all 61 AF fields and 21 cross-type sensors. The high-resolution 3.2-inch LC display offers intuitive touchscreen control of the entire menu. It has been combined with a new AF area selector switch that allows quick change of the active AF area/area.
For precise exposure, subject detection and tracking, the camera uses a 150,000 pixel light metering sensor (IR and RGB) whose data is processed by a dedicated DIGIC 6 processor.
Speed is the be-all and end-all
The EOS 5D Mark IV has been designed for the highest demands on speed, so that no moment, however fleeting, is lost. Special technologies for high-speed readout of DIGIC 6+ data enable fast continuous shooting at up to seven frames per second at full resolution and AF/AE tracking. Up to 21 RAWs or an unlimited number of JPEGs can be recorded in such a sequence. For situations where discretion is important - for example when recording breaking news or animals in their natural environment - the camera offers "Quiet recording" and "Quiet continuous recording" modes, which reduce recording noise to a minimum.
The big leap to 4K video recording
With the EOS 5D Mark IV, 4K video is available to all those who want to express their stories with moving images. With DCI 4K (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) at 30/25/24 frames per second, the camera once again demonstrates its versatility: individual images of 8.8 megapixels each can be extracted in-camera from the 4K videos - an ideal option if you need film and photos. With streaming services increasingly demanding content captured using the latest technologies on the market, high recording quality is more important than ever. The EOS 5D Mark IV offers the full package: 4K, 120 frames per second in HD, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, time-lapse video and a new HDR Movie mode.
Advanced control options and connectivity
With its numerous new and improved functions, the EOS 5D Mark IV offers unique flexibility and extensive connectivity. Built-in Wi-Fi enables secure data transfer (FTPS/FTP) and remote control of the camera via a mobile device with the Canon Camera Connect app installed. In addition, NFC ensures easy connection with compatible mobile devices. GPS adds the respective location data to the EXIF image data, which makes it easier to organize the shots. For the first time, IPTC data, which contains shooting information, for example, can also be automatically embedded in the image data.
Improved protection against dust and splash water makes the camera ideal for photographers or photojournalists working in extreme environmental conditions.
New perspectives with unique image quality
Canon is known for offering the widest range of interchangeable lenses in the world. Today, the lineup is expanded with two new Lens: the EF 24-105mm 1:4L IS II USM and the EF 16-35mm 1:2.8L III USM. The EF 24-105mm 1:4L IS II USM is a flexible and robust Lens for everyday use. With its focal length range of 24-105mm, a constant aperture of 1:4 and the optimized four-stop image stabilizer (IS), it offers consistent image sharpness and is ideal for a wide variety of shooting situations, subjects and lighting conditions. A new drive allows the aperture to be adjusted quietly when shooting video. The EF 16-35mm 1:2.8L III USM is predestined for exceptionally high-quality and impressive images. It has been matched to the high-resolution sensors of current cameras in the EOS 5D Mark IV. This high-performance Lens impresses with exceptional image quality and is the first choice for professionals and dedicated photographers. The versatile wide-angle focal lengths (16-35mm) are particularly interesting for wedding photographers and photojournalists who need to get close to their subject. The constant speed of 1:2.8 makes it a first-class choice for low-light use.
